How Do We Identify Revenue Opportunities Inside Our CRM?

Before buying another prospecting database or increasing lead-generation spend, look at the customer and prospect information you already own.

Your CRM may contain significant unrealized revenue opportunities across existing customers, previous opportunities and dormant leads.

Where to Look

Closed-lost opportunities

Not every lost opportunity is permanently lost.

Segment previous opportunities by:

  • Loss reason

  • Competitor

  • Deal size

  • Time since loss

  • Buying timeline

Some may now be worth revisiting.

Dormant leads

Identify qualified prospects with no meaningful activity over a defined period.

Prioritize using attributes such as company size, fit, historical engagement and previous conversations.

Existing customers

Look for:

  • Cross-sell opportunities

  • Upsell opportunities

  • Additional departments

  • New geographies

  • Product gaps

  • Contract expansion

  • Upcoming renewals

Stalled opportunities

Identify deals that have remained in the same stage longer than historical benchmarks.

These opportunities may require intervention or qualification.

Former customers

Churn does not always mean permanent loss.

Review why customers left and whether circumstances may have changed.

Build Signals Into the CRM

Instead of requiring salespeople to manually search thousands of records, create rules that surface opportunities automatically.

Examples:

  • Customer has product A but not product B

  • Opportunity closed lost more than 12 months ago

  • High-value lead has no activity for 90 days

  • Contract renewal approaching

  • Customer headcount increased

  • Previously inactive prospect re-engaged

  • Opportunity exceeds normal stage duration

These signals can generate tasks, notifications or prioritized account lists.

Your CRM Should Help Create Pipeline

A CRM should not function only as a database describing what already happened.

Used correctly, it can help teams determine what to do next.

That distinction changes CRM from a reporting system into a revenue tool.
